70th annual plenary session of the Conference of European Statisticians
On 20 June 2022, the most senior statisticians from some 80 countries, UN bodies and international organizations, gathered for the 70th annual plenary session of the Conference of European Statisticians (CES) – UNECE’s highest statistical decision-making body.
Participators included chief statisticians of USA, Canada, EU, all European countries, Ukraine*, Russia*, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Japan*, Australia, New Zealand & UN Statistical Division, OECD, World Bank, IMF
Among important decisions to make about the ways that essential facts about economies, societies and the environment are defined and measured, they will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics – the ‘ten commandments’ of official statistics that were developed by CES 30 years ago before being endorsed by the UN Statistical Commission and subsequently by ECOSOC, and which became a General Assembly-endorsed global standard in 2014.
This leading statistical work is the foundation for all work of Official Statistics, shaping measurement in key areas like population and housing censuses, GDP, inflation, as well as statistics on climate change, employment, migration, social exclusion and many more areas. It also defines statistical cooperation on cutting edge topics such as the use of machine learning and alternative data sources. As well as being the foundation for all policy making, it guides the work of the entire UN system, including on the SDGs.
