The UN Environment Assembly adopted a resolution on the preservation of glaciers and the cryosphere by Tajikistan

On December 12, the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEP) adopted a resolution “On conserving glaciers and cryospheres” following its seventh session at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

The resolution on preservation of glaciers and cryospheres, proposed on the initiative of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Peru, was adopted by the international community.

The resolution calls on all Member States and development partners to intensify efforts in preserving glaciers, combating climate change, expanding international cooperation and sustainability, and attracting financial resources.

In addition, the resolution officially welcomes the holding of the High-Level International Conference on Glacier Conservation, held in Dushanba in May 2025, noting the Dushanbin Declaration of Glaciers and the Dushanbins Call for Glacier Preservation.

Acclamation of this resolution at the 7th session of the UN Environment Assembly reaffirms Tajikistan’s important role in advancing the water and climate agenda, including glacier conservation at the global level.

The UN Environment Assembly is recognized as the highest environmental decision-making body worldwide.

This resolution is the first and so far the only resolution in the history of the United Nations Environment Assembly, authored by the Central Asian country, the Republic of Tajikistan.

UN Environment Assembly adopted a resolution by Tajikistan on preserving glaciers and the cryosphere

On December 12, the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), following its seventh session at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, adopted a resolution « On preserving glaciers and the cryosphere ».

The resolution on preserving glaciers and the cryosphere, proposed at the initiative of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Peru, was adopted by the international community.

The resolution encourages all Member States and development partners to intensify efforts to urgently preserve glaciers, combat climate change, enhance international cooperation and resilience, and mobilize financial resources.

Furthermore, the resolution formally welcomes the High-Level International Conference on Glaciers, held in Dushanbe in May 2025, noting the Dushanbe Glaciers Declaration and the Dushanbe Glaciers Appeal.

The unanimous adoption, by acclamation, of this Resolution at the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly affirms the significant role of the Republic of Tajikistan in advancing the global agendas on water and climate matters.

The UN Environment Assembly is recognized worldwide as the highest decision-making body on environmental issues.

This resolution is the first and, so far, only one in the history of the UN Environment Assembly sponsored by a Central Asian country, the Republic of Tajikistan.
