One of the significant developments of Independent Turkmenistan in the international political arena is its election as a member of the Executive Board of UNESCO for 2013-2017 during the elections in Paris at the 37th session of the General Conference of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. 134 out of 185 countries with the right to participate in elections have voted for Turkmenistan.
The Executive Board, which is composed of 58 countries, along with the General Conference is the governing body of the organization. Such a high level of trust towards Turkmenistan is a testament to the political authority of Turkmenistan in the global political arena. Turkmenistan traditionally cooperates with the UN in the political and humanitarian spheres and is one of the main partners of UN in the region. Peace building initiatives of the country are supported by the United Nations. In this regard, it should be noted the effective work of United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia established in Ashgabat.
