On 27 September 2007, at the initiative of Azerbaijan, the UN Human Rights Council adopted by consensus the resolution on protection of cultural rights and property in situations of armed conflict. That resolution urged all states to take necessary measures at the national, regional and international levels to address the issue of protection of cultural rights and property and to provide appropriate assistance as requested by the concerned States. Uniting Painting by Ranan R. Lurie, artist and political cartoonist

Ranan L. Lurie, named the most widely syndicated political cartoonist in the World by the Guinness Book of World Records, unveiled his Uniting Painting at the United Nations Secretariat in New York on 1 November last year in presence of Ms Nane Annan, Mr Tharoor, Under-Secretary-General of Communications and Public Information and numerous members of the diplomatic corps.
