UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General for Afghanistan and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan Robert Watkins said during a press conference at the Palais des Nations that Afghanistan’s security is « at its lowest point since the departure of the Taliban » after the 2001 U.S.-led invasion.
He said the United Nations rarely can enter 40 per cent of the country, including Kandahar and southeast regions where it must negotiate special access from all sides.
The diplomat told reporters the UN’s access to areas it wants to develop has progressively deteriorated over the past 10 years.
